Frequently Asked Questions

Who will be training my dog?

Although we are gearing up to expand our staff and services, currently all dogs are trained by our Founder, Courtney Connors.

What happens if I don’t get the results I want from dog training? Is there a guarantee?

To date we have not met a dog that we couldn’t improve. Because of the variables involved to create a well-behaved, balanced dog, including owner commitment, consistency, and follow-through, it would be impossible for BK9 to offer a 100% guarantee. Just as our clients “vet” us before hiring us, we also do our best to only choose the most dedicated and diligent owners. In doing so, we are confident that with our collaboration and teamwork, your dog will continue to achieve his/her fullest potential when they are with you. Once you hire us, we consider you part of The BK9 family, and your success is our top priority!

Does BK9 use treats to train dogs?

Yes, however, we don’t rely on a food or treat-based training program. Our approach is far more geared towards relationship based training. We’re looking to avoid the overly-fixated, amped-up dog that is waiting anxiously for the next command or food reward. That said, we will use food when we find it helpful to the individual dog, and then do our best to fade it out before the dog goes home.

What style of training do you use?

Every dog is different, which is why BK9 will customize and personalize each training program according to the dog’s needs, temperament, problematic behaviors, etc. We will work closely with the owner and the dog to determine the appropriate program.

Like any high-quality training, we start by first guiding the dog through the new behavior and slowly build the dog’s understanding through small, incremental steps. Eventually, when the behavior is solid and understood, we begin to hold the dog accountable in order to ensure reliability and consistency. Fairness and helping the dog succeed are our highest priorities.

Will the training take my dog’s personality away?

This was one of the first questions Courtney asked before sending her dog Jax off to a 5 week Board & Train and the answer she received was no! Armed with first-hand experience, we are happy to also tell you NO! Our training isn’t so much about your dogs personality as it is about their state of mind. Your dog will become the best version of themself!

Do dogs need to be vaccinated and/or altered?

We allow unaltered dogs and will never put them in an unsafe situation or with other unaltered dogs.

We allow unvaccinated dogs (when unable to vaccinate because of medical needs). Certain vaccinations are required and must be current unless medical and/or age complications exist (veterinarian verification of such waiver is required). Titers are accepted in lieu of vaccinations. Required Vaccinations: Rabies, Distemper, Parvovirus}
